Pulau Besar is the largest of eight islands off the coast of Malacca, Pulau Besar covers an area of approximately 133 hectares and is said to resemble the shape of a pregnant woman. In fact, the island has long been associated with intriguing legends and myths.

The most famous of these has it that several hundred years ago, a beautiful and kind-hearted princess of the Sultanate of Malacca fell in love with a fisherman from Sumatra. When the fisherman had to return to Sumatra, he promised the princess that he would return to marry her.

A few months later, misfortune was to befall the happy couple when the boat the fisherman was on, capsized on its way to Malacca after being caught in a raging storm. The young fisherman was to go down with the ship.

All this time, the princess had been waiting patiently for the fisherman's return. She was soon to discover that she was pregnant. Hearing no news and in total desperation, she threw herself into the sea. Legend has it that her body miraculously floated to the site of her lover's capsized ship and remained there. This is said to account for the shape of the island of Pulau Besar.

Another legend is about the shrine of the seven princesses The seven maidens were said to have been on their way to Pulau Besar from India in order to deepen their mysticism. Alas, their ship was also to sink along the way. The graves of the seven princesses were buried on the island and can still be seen until today.

There is a cave called "Yunos Cave". It is believed that in ancient times, warriors came to the cave to learn the art of mysticism. It was also used for the training of the art of 'silat', a form of martial arts.

And then there is the famous Batu Belah or Split Rock. When looking at the rock, you should bear in mind the story behind it. It tells the tale of a young apprentice who did not obey the teachings of his master who told him never to misuse his power. He choose not to heed this advice. Before he could repent, his master took out his sword and sliced the rock he was sitting on. The apprentice was to fall between the cracks, after which the rock was to mysteriously rejoin, trapping the apprentice forever.

Many of the key Thailand tourist attractions are found in and around Bangkok, although there is much to see across the whole of the country. No Thailand tour would be complete without at least a short visit to this bustling and vibrant capital, even if your time is just spent soaking up the atmosphere and enjoying the bustling markets and world class street food on offer. There is much more to do however if you have the time. Particular highlights include the iconic floating markets and the incredible Temples that the city boasts. The temples at Wat Phra Kaeo houses the huge Grand Palace and the Emerald Buddha ,and Wat Pho houses the world famous Reclining Buddha which attracts visitors from all over the world. Jim Thompson’s house is another key attraction, and is a peaceful and welcome refuge from the hustle and bustle of this vibrant city. The nightlife in Bangkok is exciting and varied, and there is much more to it than just the less than salubrious Patpong district.
If you are looking for fun in the sun then Thailand offers a wealth of beautiful islands, from party hotspots to serene and tranquil beaches. Some of the best diving in the world can be found around the tropical islands of Thailand although you may prefer to while away your days on the white sand beaches watching the sparkling sea lap the shore. For the more active traveller looking for something a little different we recommend our Thailand trekking tours through the jungles and national parks of the North, visiting hill tribes and villages along the way. Some of the key Thailand tourist attractions can be found around the Chiang Mai area, including sacred temples, lush forests, bustling markets and the Wat Phra That Doi Suthep temple. Our jungle adventures here include short treks, majestic elephant rides through the forest, and exciting bamboo rafting trips.
Why not combine some of each on our Jungles and Beaches tour?
Encounters offers a range of fantastic Thailand tours to suit all budgets and we would be delighted to help you with your perfect trip.
The first day was extremely strenuous and long. To top it, S was not feeling too well. We hiked for about 12-13 kilometers that day. Walking that distance is okay, but climbing from 7000 something ft to about 12,000 ft is quite a stretch. First two days of the trek are make or break. Either you acclimatize or you don't. The trek route is unbelievably beautiful, and it keeps getting prettier by the hour. I was carrying the D90, and the weight of it along with the backpack and the thinning air was not very fun. But the pics that came out of it were totally worth the effort. :) So, the first day, we walked right up till 7 pm. En route, saw a bunch of Kashmiri kids playing on a rope swing. Those swings looked easy enough, bur city butts are not used to such things. Needless to say, we provided free entertainment to those kids, who were in splits seeing our pathetic attempts. There is minimal to no civilization on the way. Stopped at a small tea/maggi shop in the middle of nowhere. They knew they were the only ones around, and made the most of it. Charged a premium for everything. Our bill for omelette, maggi and tea for three people was over 500 bucks! The camp site was one of the most welcome sites we had seen in a while. :) First day was done and we had come out of it without any injuries or AMS. Being that tired is actually a good feeling. Every muscle hurt. Hot food tasted divine and the Bournvita served right after, seemed like a cure for all maladies. The Milky Way had lit up the sky beautifully. Barely 9.30 pm, and I was out like a light in the tent.

Amused Kashmiri kids on the way

Multiple rest stops

Early to bed and early to rise was an easy tenet to follow in this trek. We woke up without any alarms at 6 am. Plan for Day Two was to cross the Nichnai Pass and camp at the base of Vishnusar Lake. A climb till 13,500 feet and then descent to 12,000 for the camp. This was probably my worst day. As we kept going higher, we started walking on a fair amount of slushy snow. Thank god for waterproof shoes! At the top of Nichnai Pass, we decided to sit in the snow and eat lunch. On hindsight, should have started moving down from that altitude real quick. Who learned from making no mistakes anyway. :) So, there we were, freezing our asses in the snow and happily munching on poori aaloo. And then I started feeling uneasy. Rest of the day was just a blur. Dragged myself to basecamp (with ample help) and almost passed out. Folks around me were contemplating the easiest way to go back, if my situation didn't improve. But thank god for small mercies, I did feel better a few hours later, pushed down some food, got a good night's sleep and was bright and shiny next morning. :) So, my face off with AMS was done. Nichnai Pass was stunning even with a severe headache.

At Nichnai Pass
The next day was a day of incredible views. To be fair, all days were. But this was the first day we saw few of the alpine lakes. Pictures cannot explain the sight that was. Day 3 task was to cross the Gadsar Pass (13,750 ft) and the alpine lakes, Vishnusar, Krishansar and Gadsar. Gadsar Pass was one of the highest points of the trek. After climbing half way up Gadsar Pass, you get this awe inspiring bird's eye view of the valley with the two lakes. Cameras fell short and so did words. We just sat there. Right after Gadsar Pass, there was a beautiful meadow walk which led to the Gadsar Lake. By far, the most beautiful alpine lake of the lot. There was ice floating on the lake, creating shadows with the sunlight. Everything about the place was surreal. Cities, noise, people - everything seemed so distant here. Like this was all there was. The blue green water, the green mountains speckled with snow, the mellow warmth of the sun and a few dear ones. As is true for all good things, we had to move on with vivid memories. Somewhere near the next basecamp, a local family offered us tea (dinner as well). This was the month of Ramadan. Which meant that the family had not eaten anything all day. Yet the warmth with which they welcomed us, made tea for us, sat with us and heard our ridiculous stories about the tough terrain (for them, its a cakewalk); it says a lot about human compassion. And a whole lot about the absurdity of bias based on religion or any other reason.

All the hospitality :)
Day 4 was a relatively easy day. About three hours of steep ascent and then a beautiful meadow walk. By now, our bodies were well acclimatized and our comfort level had gone up. Crossed an Indian army post on the way to Satsar basecamp. We were there during the good weather days. The thought of not just surviving at this altitude in -30 degree celsius during the winter months, but to also encounter terrorists was a scary thought. In the humdrum of our daily lives, we forget what so many people do for us without saying a word; without any complaints. And you thought your job was tough? Think again.
Meadow walk to Satsar

Since this was an easier day, Taarak Bhai suggested a short hike to a lake near basecamp. If you do this route, this lake is highly recommended. The sunset there was memorable. Some of the folks still had the energy to go further up ahead. I was just happy with my camera, as parts of the lake lit up with the receding sun.

Next day was a hike to the twin lakes Gangabal and Nandakol. The descent was brutal. Probably, one of the worst days for S. Just when we thought that we were done with AMS, it hit her. Hydrate and take it one step a time was the buzz word for the day. We did reach the campsite safe and sound. The next day was a rest day and by far one of my favourite days. :) While everyone planned for hiking around the place, we three went to the Nandakol lake, found a corner and did our own thing. My thing being a Ruskin Bond book and music. Probably this would be as close to Utopia as I will ever be.

Reading time :)
The final day was a steep descent to Naranag from 11,500 ft to 7,500 ft. The thing with these long treks are that they make you aware of your strengths and weaknesses. Probably true for all tough things in life. The sense of accomplishment was heady. Back in Srinagar, the sight of a hot shower was blissful. So was the mutton rogan josh and biryani. :) This trek should be a must on your wishlist (if you have one). Hoping I have given enough reasons to that effect.

Rotorua by AliceRotorua is famous for its thermal areas, when you step into the town, the smell of rotten eggs will always be around you. The steaming hot springs and bubbling mud pools are really good for your skin. Rotorua is also a rich playground for adventure sports. There are lots of activities like skydiving, bungy jumping, skyline and some water sports. You can have a try at whatever you like. In the evening, go out for a walk, you will see the town when it is quiet and peaceful. Or you can go to a bar, have a drink and chat with friends.

Rotorua is a good place to experience Maori culture. Visit one of the Maori villages to meet Maori face to face, learn about the world famous haka and traditional hangi. Whakarewarewa Maori Village is one of the Maori villages here. The local villagers will show you around to see the Maori house and the volcanic area you can go around. They will tell you about the word ‘Kia-Ora’ that is a way to say hello, welcome and thank you in their language, and tell you the stories about their life. You will have a wonderful dancing show by the local people and they will ask you to dance with them. They are very friendly to the visitors; you can take photos with them after the dance show. Nearby you can eat tasty sweet corn which is pulled out of the hot mineral pool and their hangi pie is really delicious! The shops in the village sell authentic arts and crafts, and you can learn more about traditional culture.

Taupo by AliceIf you go to Taupo, it’s well worth visiting Huka falls. Huka falls is located in the heart of the Wairakei Park. The water surging through this narrow gut is flowing from Lake Taupo. The Waikato is New Zealand’s longest river. The walking tracks that lead both north and south along the river from here are worthy of investigation on foot or mountain bike. It takes about one hour reach the end of Huka falls walkway on foot. Throughout the journey, you will see the river with an amazing color. You can go swimming in the river as well.

Ninety Mile Beach

90 Mile Beach by AlexTo  travel here it's best to rent a car. 90 Mile Beach is a very long beach. However, it has smooth sand like a road. You can drive on the beach at about 90-100 km/h and it’s not dangerous because the beach is wide and has a hard surface. Not far from 90 Mile Beach there is another interesting place- called “Cape Reinga”. It’s a cape with a light house and you can see an astonishing view. That place very popular with tourists because two oceans meet here: the  Pacific Ocean and the Tasman Sea. If the weather is beautiful with clear visibility, you can see a different color of water in the two oceans. Picture “A” shows “Cape Reinga” in a very strong fog and visibility of not more than 20 meters. You can compare the two pictures taken in different weather: picture “A” was taken when the weather was rainy and picture “B” was taken when the weather was good.

Queenstown

Queenstown is a little town in the South Island of NZ. Only 11,000 people live there. It reminds me of a little village, or a little ski resort in Switzerland. Queenstown is very famous for adrenalin rushes. You can do a lot of things there.  You should definitely try the Shotover Canyon Swing. In this variation of Bungee Jumping, you sit in a chair and fall 60m backwards into the deepness. I'd recommend going canyoning in the 12-Mile-Delta Canyon. Both are very crazy stuff, but you must to do them. You must see the beautiful view from the Skyline Gondola. On top of Lomomd Cres, when you need an adrenalin kick, you can drive Down Hill Bike.  And the most important thing that you must do in Queenstown is: eat a Fergburger. That's the best burger in the world.
