The pilgrimage centers in Uttar Pradesh Tourism comprise of some of the most illustrious sites of the Hindus, Jains, Buddhists and Muslims. Varanasi, on the banks of holy Ganges, is one of the oldest cities of the world which has a rich, historical heritage where pilgrims throng here to have a holy bath in Ganges. Mathura and Vrindavan are two sacred sites, Mathura being the birth place of Lord Krishna. Allahabad is famous for the confluence or ‘Sangam’ of the three sacred rivers being Ganga, Saraswati and Yamuna. Every 12 years over 10 million Hindu pilgrims congregate here during Kumbha Mela. The first written evidence of the Kumbha Mela can be found in the accounts of Chinese traveler, Huan Tsang or Xuanzang (602 - 664 A.D.) who visited India in 629 -645, during the reign of King Harshavardhana. However, the observance dates back many ce
nturies to ancient India's Vedic period, where the river festivals first started being organized. In Bhagavata Purana in Hindu mythology, its origin is found in one of the popular section, the Samudra manthan episode (Churning of the ocean of milk. The account goes that the demigods had lost their strength by the curse of Durvasa Muni, and to regain it, they approach Lord Bhrama and Lord Shiva who directed all demigods to the Godhead Lord Vishnu, He instructed them for churning ocean of milk Ksheera Sagara (primordial ocean of milk) for amrita (the nectar of immortality). This required them to make a temporary agreement with their arch enemies, the demons or Asuras, to worked together with a promise of sharing the wealth equally thereafter. However, when the Kumbha(urn) containing the amrita appeared, a fight ensued. For twelve days and twelve nights (equivalent to twelve human years) the gods and demons fought in the sky for the pot of amrita. Hence the Purna (complete) Kumbh takes place every twelve years. Ayodhya is the birth place of Lord Rama and is patronized by not only pilgrims but tourists also.

The other important pilgrimage centers in the Uttar Pradesh Tourism map are Sarnath and Kushinagar, the holy shrines of the Buddhists. Sarnath is the place where Lord Buddha had preached his first sermon. One of the most famous Muslim shrines in Uttar Pradesh is the Jama Masjid of Agra, one of the largest mosques found in India. All in all a place with rich and divine heritage and unbelievable urge to draw people from all over the world
